Peach County Schools recently announced the well-deserved retirement of Superintendent Dr. Lionel Brown, marking the end of a dedicated career in education, with nearly seven years spent guiding the district through significant advancements and challenges. His tenure is characterized by a deep commitment to students, staff, and the community, leaving a lasting and positive impact on the schools and the broader Peach County area.
Under Dr. Brown's leadership, Peach County Schools made notable strides in academics, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships, all contributing to an environment of improvement and advancement:
Advancements in Education and Partnerships
-
Career and Technical Education (CTAE) Expansion: A major focus of advancement has been preparing students for future success through expanded career pathways. In 2024, the district partnered with Central Georgia Technical College to offer new courses in high-demand fields such as welding, cosmetology, and early childhood education. This initiative provides students with valuable, state-certified skills, as evidenced by a 100% pass rate for the Peach County High School Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students who became state-certified.
-
Technological and Advanced Learning: The district has secured partnerships that elevate the learning experience. Peach County High School partnered with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), providing teachers with professional development and giving students access to educators at Georgia Tech on topics ranging from robotics and AI to cybersecurity and data analysis. Furthermore, PCHS has been named an AP Honor School, highlighting a commitment to rigorous academic programs.
-
Academic Growth: The commitment to student success is reflected in academic gains. Notably, Byron Middle School achieved a significant 17.3% growth in mathematics, demonstrating the impact of focused educational strategies. Student achievements have also been celebrated through numerous awards, including Advanced Placement National Awards for students receiving the National Rural and Small Town Award and the National African American Recognition Award.
Infrastructure and Community-Focused Development
-
Modernizing Facilities: Dr. Brown oversaw substantial improvements to the district's physical infrastructure, ensuring students have modern, effective learning environments. This included an
million renovation for Fort Valley Middle School, which was completed recently, and the opening of the new Peach County High School campus. -
Strategic Use of Resources: Demonstrating fiscal responsibility and a respect for local history, Dr. Brown led the effort to relocate the Board of Education headquarters to the old high school building. This conserved taxpayer money and preserved a community landmark, creating a "one-stop shop" for central office needs.
-
Navigating the Pandemic: Dr. Brown successfully guided the school system through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He took proactive steps to close the digital gap for rural students by providing devices to every student who needed one and partnering with local businesses and community centers to create WiFi hubs. This work led to noted improvements in remote learning and a reduction in parent complaints.
Recognition and Legacy
Dr. Brown's exceptional dedication and leadership have not gone unnoticed. He was the distinguished recipient of the Marvin E. Lewis Sr. Trailblazer Award from the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) in 2025. This prestigious award recognizes a minority or underrepresented superintendent who has broken barriers, increased diversity and equity, and enhanced the productivity of all students through a diverse perspective. He was also nominated for the Eli Wolf Advocacy Award by the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs (AAASP), reflecting his commitment to equitable opportunities for all children, including adapted sports programs.
Dr. Brown's legacy in Peach County is one of forward-thinking vision, marked by tangible improvements that position the district for continued excellence. The community is deeply grateful for his service and wishes him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.
