Peach County Workforce Development Center nearing completion

February 11, 2015
Submitted by Janet Kelly

Fort Valley, GA—The Peach County Board of Commissioners and the Development Authority of Peach County have partnered to construct a facility to bring new educational opportunities to the area. Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) will be the primary tenant in the new Peach County Workforce Development Center (PCWDC), providing a local resource for educational and training opportunities. CGTC expects to begin offering classes in the Center by summer semester 2015.

The Center offers Peach County citizens the ability to cultivate a workforce with the skills and training needed to further economic development in the surrounding area. Additionally, this facility will give the community greater accessibility for educational options.

“Offering classes in this new Center is another aspect of the many ways CGTC provides quality education for Central Georgia citizens,” said Dr. Joan Thompson, CGTC vice president for Satellite Operations South. “We’re thrilled to be able to build upon our long-standing partnership with the Peach County community and look forward to better meeting the County's needs for adult education, credit instruction, and business and industry training in this new facility owned by the citizens of Peach County.”

Central Georgia Technical College will operate the facility and offer academic training programs, as well as adult education and GED® preparation courses. It is anticipated that CGTC will offer programs that may include commercial truck driving, industrial training programs, welding, diesel mechanics, health care and others. General education courses may be offered at the Center as well.

Dr. Ivan Allen, president of CGTC, commented, “While we have had a long-standing presence in the community, this county-owned Center will allow the College to offer more educational and training opportunities closer to home for our Peach County students.”

CGTC can also expand dual enrollment and ACCEL programs to high school students at the Peach County Workforce Development Center, allowing them to can earn college credit while in high school. The Literacy Education for Adults in Peach (LEAP) program, a free program enabling students to earn their GED®, get tutoring and receive help with job placement, will be relocating to the PCWDC as well. These programs benefit the community by providing early intervention for at risk students, reducing the high school drop-out rate, and increasing the number of high school graduates prepared to enter the local workforce.

The $5.3 million project was funded by Peach County using various sources including the Peach County SPLOST and several state and federal grants.

"We look forward to moving into the facility," said Jimmy Faircloth, assistant vice president for Facilities and Ancillary Services at CGTC. "This project has long been a desire of the College and the community and we are glad to be a part of making it a reality. We look forward to working with our partners in Peach County to provide area citizens a way to achieve their educational and career goals."

The 18,340 square-foot building, designed by JMA Architecture, Inc., is being constructed by International City Builders on 10 acres of land donated by the Development Authority of Peach County. The Center is located in the South Peach Industrial Park, southeast of the City of Fort Valley.
